Equine Assisted Learning, or EAL as it is called, is a relatively new field, although the use of horses in physical and occupational rehabilitation has been in practice for some time.  In 2003, Higher Trails established their Equine Assisted Learning program which has shown to be very effective in the treatment of depression, addictions, low self esteem, behaviour issues, anger management, and victimization.  We don't use the horse as a prop on the ground - 50% or more of our work is done IN the saddle!

Equine Assisted Learning is experiential in makeup. Those participating, whether involved in a group setting or as individuals, learn though interaction with the horses.  The trained facilitator draws upon those interactions and encourages the discussion of feelings, actions and relationships. Higher Trails conducts training programs for those desirous of learning the skills, techniques and processes of an Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator.  All classes are kept small and are ALL hands on directly with the horses.... our partners.

The EAL Facilitator Training Program has four stages.  If successful, the candidate will be granted full EAL Facilitator status, and in addition to conducting EAL sessions, can now teach, and mentor for certification, other candidates in the Higher Trails EAL process.
